HOW DOES TUMMY TUCK SURGERY WORK?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, as it’s also known, is a popular cosmetic procedure for people who carry weight that they’re unable to shift through exercise or by following a healthy diet. Often weight in these instances is generated by genetics, and surgery can be an effective method of removing fat to smooth and define the body’s contours. The surgery removes fat or loose skin and works to tighten the abdominal muscles to give the stomach a more toned look.

IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING SURGERY OR WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW THE TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURE WORKS, READ ON BELOW.

WHO IS THE TUMMY TUCK SUITABLE FOR?

The tummy tuck procedure is suitable for both men and women and is popular with women who have been left with loose, sagging skin after pregnancy, as well as people who’ve lost a lot of weight but have their loose skin remaining. If you’re planning on future pregnancies a tummy tuck is not advisable as the surgery can affect your abdominal muscles, which could cause complications for you during your pregnancy and labour.

THE PROCEDURE

The surgery can take between one and five hours depending on the type of tummy tuck you’re having, from a complete abdominoplasty to a partial abdominoplasty. You will be under general anaesthetic, or ‘asleep’, for the full procedure.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Your post care should involve ideally an overnight stay in the facility you have the procedure, or at least arrange for someone to drive you home after your operation. You might be asked to wear a compression bandage to complete the results of your surgery. You will have pain and some swelling after the operation, but your surgeon can advise on pain relief. You will also have some scarring after the procedure, which will never completely disappear but can dissolve over time with oils and ointments.

3 interesting facts about the tummy tuck

TUMMY TUCKS ARE AN IDEAL WAY TO GET RID OF ANY EXCESS FAT THAT CANNOT BE REMOVED BY DIETING OR EXERCISING.

3 interesting facts about the tummy tuck

IN MOST CASES, THE PROCEDURE AIMS TO TIGHTEN THE MUSCLES AND GIVE YOU A TONED CORE TO GIVE YOU THE SILHOUETTE YOU HAVE ALWAYS DREAMED OF. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE TUMMY TUCK, HERE ARE THREE INTERESTING FACTS YOU MAY NEVER HAVE REALISED ABOUT THE PROCEDURE:

1. IT WAS FIRST DEVELOPED OVER 100 YEARS AGO

Whilst many presume that the tummy tuck is a fairly modern procedure, it was actually first developed over 100 years ago. Despite this, the technique is still quite a contemporary procedure in comparison to other plastic surgery procedures which were first invented in Ancient Greece and Rome.
The tummy tuck was initially performed as a medical procedure to treat conditions such as an umbilical hernia, however, it was in 1890 that the French discovered it could also be used to improve body contouring, which is what we see performed today.

2. LIPOSUCTION WAS ONLY INTRODUCED IN THE 1980S

Within the last 40 years, the methods of tummy tuck procedures have improved dramatically. During the 1960s and 1970s, scars became minimised and body contouring methods had developed. Yet, it was only as recently as 1988 that the revolutionary liposuction procedure was introduced, meaning that all body sizes and shapes could undergo the procedure to improve their silhouette with dramatic results.

3. THERE ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF TUMMY TUCK

Although tummy tucks are usually considered as a generalised term, there are a number of different types to suit a range of body types. The most minor procedure is known as the mini tummy tuck which involves the removal of loose skin on the lower abdomen. On the other hand, the full tummy tuck removes large amounts of excess skin and tightens the muscles which targets the entire torso.

Josie Gibson flaunts the results of her tummy tuck

Josie_Gibson_2015 Tummy tuck
BIG BROTHER WINNER JOSIE GIBSON HAS BEEN FLAUNTING THE RESULTS OF HER TUMMY TUCK.

The starlet – famed for winning the reality show in 2010 – is a notorious yo-yo dieter who has battled the bulge for many years. Now in the best shape of her life, the 32-year-old underwent the surgical procedure back in November to remove the excess skin from her body. This week she’s let the world see a glimpse of her transformation by sharing a revealing picture on social media. Along with the image, she wrote: “So happy with the results of myabdominoplasty in September. Scar is amazing and healing nicely.”
Last year, Josie freely spoke about her decision to go under the knife, revealing that she had actually been considering the procedure for three years. The reality star told New magazine:“I lost a lot of weight and had all this loose skin. I’ve been debating a tummy tuck since 2013, but I’ve always been too scared. Then there was a big debate about me having children.”
The tummy tuck isn’t the first cosmetic surgery that Josie has undergone since she shot to stardom seven years ago. Just a few years after being named the winner of Big Brother, she had a boob job to go from a size B to a DD. Discussing the breast enlargement, Josie gushed: “I feel so sexy. They just make me look a bit more like a woman instead of a Neanderthal. I was umming and ahhing about the size of them. I was going to go to a C, then a D, then a DD, but I think for my height and my frame, a C wouldn’t have made a difference. I didn’t want them too big because I still want to train hard. Now they’re not too big and they’re not too little – they’re perfect.”

5 interesting facts about tummy tucks

5 interesting facts about tummy tucks

Tummy tucks are one of the most commonly undertaken procedures of cosmetic surgery.

5 interesting facts about tummy tucks

This is true with both women and men, but notably, tummy tucks are popular with women who have had children and are unable to get their stomachs back to how they were before through exercise alone. Read on for five interesting facts about tummy tucks.

1. You can choose a full or mini tummy tuck

Some women feel their need for a tummy tuck is not severe enough, e.g they have only a small ‘muffin top’ and don’t feel that it warrants the surgery of a ‘full’ tuck, yet they can’t get rid of it through exercise alone. The great news is that there is now a choice of tummy tuck available, with either a full tummy tuck (also known as a Complete Abdominoplasty) or a mini tummy tuck. Mini tummy tucks, also known as Partial Abdominoplasty, take less time, cost less money and are ideal for those who need a smaller amount of work done.

2. It’s very popular

Tummy tucks are very popular and in 2015 they were the 8th most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for women in the UK. Even for men, they were they 9th most popular procedure.

3. You can get more than one procedure carried out

Tummy tucks can be carried out in conjunction with a choice of other procedures, which means you only need one general anaesthetic for two procedures, which in turns costs you less and means less recuperation time. Popular choices for complementary procedures include a breast uplift or vein removal, combinations often referred to as a ‘Mummy Makeover’.

4. Complementary procedures

As part of a tummy tuck procedure, many patients have liposuction carried out to complement the tuck itself. This can help rid you of fat that is hard to budge, which is common in the stomach area as it’s generally the last place it stays.

5. Celebs who have had tummy tucks

You may not know it but many celebs have undergone tummy tucks. Those rumoured to have had the procedure include Kerry Katona, Tara Reid, Shar Jackson and Britney Spears.
